Indian sweets are known as "Mithai" or "Meetha" in Hindi and are a must-have for festivals, get-togethers as well as celebrations big and small. Most Indian sweets use basic ingredients such as all-purpose flour, gram flour, semolina, nuts, ghee, sugar, jaggery, and milk. They also use floral spices like cardamom, nutmeg, and saffron to enhance the flavors and aromas.
Here in the US, in addition to authentic Indian sweets, I also love to make quick Indian desserts. Ingredients such as almond flour, cream cheese, ricotta cheese, and condensed milk. These time-saving ingredients are perfect for making delicious homemade desserts in no time!
Although Indian desserts are available in stores and restaurants, making them at home is fun. Plus you can make them with better quality ingredients and even avoid using artificial coloring, sweeteners, etc. I love making them together with my kids, especially during festivals such as Diwali and Holi. We had so much fun getting to bond over stories of how I celebrated these festivals growing up in India.
Some of these recipes are made using an Air Fryer for a healthier take on the traditional recipes. While a few are Instant Pot recipes that deliver the same authentic taste with less time and effort.
As you read through these heavenly recipes, you will learn how to make a perfect one-string sugar syrup for no-fail Indian dessert recipes like Laddu, Jalebi, and Balushahi just to name a few. I have included traditional recipes such as Gajar Ka Halwa, and also a quicker Instant Pot Gajar Halwa with a dairy-free option and the same authentic taste.
