We're so excited about this list of tasty vegan recipes that are completely plant-based. The Indian culture has a great foundation in making many dishes already vegan, and this list also includes new versions of classic recipes that have been adapted towards a vegetable-forward diet.
I can promise you that all of these recipes are full of rich spices and aromatics to make each bite even more delicious than the last. Many of these Indian vegan recipes are asked for time and time again by our friends and family.
Some of our favorites include the Vegan Masala French Toast for breakfast, Instant Pot Black Eyed Peas Curry or Vegetable Hakka Noodles for lunch, and Tofu Makhani and Chana Masala for dinner. Looking to impress your guest? Try popular Indian street food Ragda Patties. These recipes are so vibrant in flavor and texture and will make you feel your best with all plant-based ingredients.
You can't forget the side dishes and condiments too - these are some of our favorites. Mango Pickles are something you will always want on hand for mealtime. Fresh Turmeric Pickles and Cauliflower Pickles are a fun garnish to add to any recipe. When it comes to chutneys, Cilantro Mint Chutney and Coconut Chutney, are almost a requirement to have on hand for extra deliciousness.
How to Veganize Indian Recipes
There are lots of simple and easy ingredient substitutes to use when making an Indian recipe completely plant-based. Here are some tips that are helpful when cooking:
- Substitute Meat with Hearty Vegetables. Make the same sauce, just use a veggie base of things like mushrooms, bell peppers, cauliflower, etc. as a substitute for the meat.
- Swap Heavy Cream or Milk for Plant-Based Dairy. Coconut milk is a common ingredient in Indian cooking. I also recommend trying my homemade cashew cream as another creamy alternative to heavy cream.
- Swap Out the Ghee. You can use oil or a plant-based butter instead, both will work great in Indian recipes.
- Use Vegan Yogurt rather than Regular. A simple switch is to use plant-based vegan yogurt rather than dairy-based yogurt in any of these recipes. You'll hardly notice a difference!
- Use Tofu instead of Paneer. Love Paneer Makhani but can't eat dairy? Try my Tofu Makhani recipe that uses extra firm tofu and has a super satisfying bite. You can also use Tofu in Paneer Biryani , Palak Paneer, or Paneer Parathas instead of Paneer.
The Indian culture has so many fantastic flavors and spices to make every recipe shine. Many of our recipes are vegan to begin with, but those that aren't are easy to convert into a plant-based recipe with just a couple of ingredient swaps.
